Arunachala ('Red Mountain') is a hill in Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu, and a major pilgrimage site in India, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Arunachalesvara Temple, one of the significant temples in the Tamil Shaivite tradition is located at its base. Throughout the year, pilgrims engage in a practice called girivalam or pradakshina, circumambulating the circumference of the mountain as an act of reverence.
