| Vimba vimba, also known as the vimba bream, vimba, zanthe, or zarte, is a freshwater ray-finned fish from the family Leuciscidae, which includes Eurasian minnows and daces. It has a slender, elongated body with silvery sides and a darker back, and features a slightly subterminal (downward-facing) mouth, adapted for bottom feeding. Commonly found in rivers and large lakes across Central and Eastern Europe, the species migrates upstream to spawn in gravel-rich tributaries. It is valued both in local fisheries and for its ecological role in freshwater ecosystems. |
