The Monterey Cypress, native to the central coast of California, can now be found throughout California, as well as Golden Gate Park itself. This particular tree, known to have been planted sometime in the 1880`s when John McLaren was park superintendent and living in his then house at the time, is now named in his honor. It is also named for long term San Francisco resident Joshua Norton, the self proclaimed Emperor of The United States.
