| The first use of the new building dates back to 17 BC. During the ludi saeculares ("secular games"), although the works were not completed until 13 BC. The theatre was inaugurated by Augustus a year later.3 It was dedicated to Marcus Claudius Marcellus, son of his sister Octavia, who had died a decade earlier and whom he had designated as heir by marrying him to his daughter Julia.
