TheÃÂ Space NeedleÃÂ is anÃÂ observation towerÃÂ inÃÂ Seattle,ÃÂ Washington, aÃÂ landmarkÃÂ of theÃÂ Pacific Northwest, and an icon of Seattle. It was built in theÃÂ Seattle CenterÃÂ for theÃÂ 1962 World's Fair. Once the tallest structure west of theÃÂ Mississippi River,[7]ÃÂ it is 605ÃÂ ft (184ÃÂ m) high, 138ÃÂ ft (42ÃÂ m) wide, and weighs 9,550ÃÂ tons.ÃÂ It has an observation deck at 520ÃÂ ft (160ÃÂ m) and the rotatingÃÂ SkyCity restaurantÃÂ at 500ÃÂ ft (150ÃÂ m).[7]ÃÂ TheÃÂ downtown SeattleÃÂ skyline, as well as theÃÂ OlympicÃÂ andÃÂ Cascade Mountains,ÃÂ Mount Rainier,ÃÂ Mount Baker,ÃÂ Elliott BayÃÂ and surrounding islands can be viewed from the top of the Needle.
