This horse's head was one of those that drew the chariot of the moon-goddess Selene. She balanced the group of Helios in the other corner of the pediment. The horse is weary from its night-long labour: the eye bulges, the nostrils flare, the mouth gapes, the veins standout and the skin is stretched tight over the great cheekbone. Photograph of the Elgin Marbles, also known as the Parthenon Sculptures, displayed at the British Museum, London. The ancient marble reliefs and sculptures originate from the Parthenon in Athens and date to the 5th century BCE. The image highlights the classical craftsmanship, sculptural detail, and narrative reliefs that exemplify Ancient Greek art, mythology, and architectural sculpture.
