The Valley of Canali is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating valleys in the Alps. The name 'Val Canali' derives from the watercourse of the Canali torrent, which runs through it in its entirety. Lateral to the Valley of Canali, lies the Valley of Pradidali (erroneously reported also as 'Val Pravitali'), more rugged and wilder than the Valley of Canali, with vertical walls carved by the Pradidali stream, which flows into the Canali torrent just above 1,100 m above sea level, at the locality of Ritonda Madonna della Neve Sabbionade. The valley stretches between the approximately 1,000 m of altitude of Castel Pietra (978 m asl) and the 2,900 m of its highest summit (Cima Canali) and it is surrounded by the Dolomite peaks of the Pale di San Martino Pala Group. One of the hallmarks of the valley's landscape is its rich forest of spruce and larch, which lights up in warm colors in autumn. The Pala group (also known as Pale di San Martino) is the largest massif of the Dolomites, with about 240 km2 of surface, located between eastern Trentino and Veneto (province of Belluno), in the area between Primiero (valleys of Cismon, Canali, Travignolo), Valle del Biois (Falcade, Canale d'Agordo) and Agordino.
