The well's mineral-medicinal waters have been renowned for their curative properties since the 19th century. The waters are rich in bicarbonates and sulphates, traditionally used to ease rheumatic, skin, and digestive disorders. Due to the scarcity of fresh water on the island, the well was excavated, and its water was declared of Public Utility in 1949. The original well structure is now a significant tourist spot, with a modern spa hotel nearby offering treatments using the same water source.
