The Mission Valley Grapevine, planted in what is today Montecito, just north of Santa Barbara, when the Spanish settlers planted only the basic food crops necessary, figs, olives, and grapes. The one vine grew to a reported one-half acre, and ten feet in diameter. That was big enough when, in 1895, it produced 10 tons of grapes. descriptive tile plaque |
