A massed formation of British Lancaster bombers flying overhead at the start of a Thousand Bomber Raid. During World War Two Sir Arthur Harris conceived the bold idea of assembling a force of 1,000 bombers and sending them against a German city. The first raid was on Cologne on the night of May 30-31, 1942.
