| Originally a red light district called Morton Street which was filled with brothels and gambling dens, by the early 1900`s people were complaining about it. Then came the big earthquake and fire of 1906 that wiped out most of downtown, including Morton Street. During the rebuilding period high end and fashionable shops and restaurants moved in and the two block stretch was blocked off to traffic so the pedestrians can safley stroll along.
