Standing in the north west corner of the monastic complex the tower was originally on the outside of the old monastic walls. The tower is superbly built and unusually wide, being 5.62 metres in diameter at the base tapering towards the top. It was struck by lightning in 1135, which accounts for the tower only being 19.3 metres tall. It is estimated to be just 2 3rds of it's original height.
