| Rolandseck Castle in the Remagen district of Rolandswerth was a hilltop castle on the Rhine, the preserved ruins of which are called Rolandsbogen. In 1040 it was first mentioned as Rulcheseck (Ruolechereck)[1]. The castle was built in 1122 by Archbishop Friedrich I of Cologne together with the Nonnenwerth women's monastery. A previous building may have existed from 1040. |
