Comic team Suzanne Rand and John Monteith, known professionally as Monteith and Rand, perform at ChicagoFest on August 6, 1980. The comic duo did a brief stint at Chicago's famed Second City training ground and gained popularity in the late 1970s and 1980s. They had their own Broadway show and performed regularly on talk shows including the behemoth of the era, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. They performed a 90-minute show of their act taped at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City which aired on the Showtime cable tv channel. Monteith was an actor as well and an improvisation teacher. Rand was the electric, spirited character while Monteith was more laconic and laid-back. Part of their act was soliciting concepts, phrases, or words from the audience and building from it a funny sketch. They were sometimes compared to the more famous duo of Mike Nichols and Elaine May, but without the neuroses. Suzanne Rand died at home in New York City on April 2, 2025, at the age of 75. Her showbiz partner Monteith predeceased her in 2018, passing at 69 in Jersey City, NJ.
