| Peroxisomes are typically spherical or oval-shaped organelles enclosed by a single membrane. The membrane of peroxisomes contains proteins called peroxins, which are involved in peroxisome biogenesis and function. Peroxisomes contain a variety of enzymes that catalyze different biochemical reactions. One of the most important enzymes found in peroxisomes is catalase, which catalyzes the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into water and oxygen. This detoxifies hydrogen peroxide, a harmful byproduct of various metabolic reactions, preventing oxidative damage to the cell. |
