The yellow-crowned night heron, Nyctanassa violacea, is a wading bird know to inhabit shallow water. The bird is only found in the America`s. It eats mainly crustaceans, but will also eat insects, fish, lizards and rodents. Earliest fossils for the heron date back 2-2.5 million years. Both parents share the responsibility of raising the brood.
