Mukteswara Temple, or Mukteswar, is the `Gem of Orissan Architecture` and is considered the best Temple in the capital city of Orissa. Built in 950 A.D, Mukteswara Temple is literally a dream realized in sandstone. The temple is said to be the structure, where sculpture and architecture are in synchronization with one another. The most significant feature of the Temple is the porch, called ‘torana’, which acts as the gateway to the octagonal compound. The ‘torana’ dates back to about 900 CE and shows the influence of Buddhist architecture. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is considered as the most complex Lord amongst the Hindu Gods. The term `Mukteswara` suggests `Lord who gives freedom through Yoga` and this fact is further empowered by the sculptural images embraced in the temple which is imprinted with figures of ascetics in different poses of meditation. Inside the Temple complex, in front of the main Temple, there are several smaller shrines that comprise numerous lingams of Lord Shiva. The Temples are one of the prominent tourist attractions of this capital city of Odisha.
