The Japantown YWCA in San Francisco is recognized not just for their association with the Japanese American Issei woman, those who are first generation, but also to the LGBTQ+ and African American civil rights movements. Because of state and federal laws in the early 1900`s, Japanese Americans were prohibited from joining and using established YWCA facilities, so, in 1912 the first indepentent YWCA in the whole nation, was formed in San Francisco. This building, by famed architect Julia Morgan, was opened in 1932, with money raised not just from the local Japanese community, but from the YWCA nationally. As seen 19 October 2022.
