Audience members pose questions to historian David Kertzer and Abe Foxman, former longtime Anti-Defamation League director, attend a discussion of the Brown University professor emeritus' recently released book, "The Pope at War," about the controversial Roman Catholic Pontiff, Pius 12th. Rabbi David Vaisman moderated. Pope Pius 12th detractors call him Hitler's Pope, for his appeasement of the Nazis in World War II, while his adherents claim the pope had no choice and averted a major schism and damage for the church, even urging a path for his sainthood. Kertzer was one of a select few historians who was granted access to secret Vatican documents by the current Pope Francis. According to Kertzer, a Pulitzer Prize winner, "The myth that the pope couldn't do anything was a myth." The event was held at Temple B'nai Abraham in Livingston, New Jersey on April 28, 2024.
