| Sheol, abode of the dead in the Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament). The term can be interpreted to mean either the literal place in which dead people are placed (i.e., in the ground) or the ancient worldâs concept of the afterlife as a subterranean âland of gloom and deep darknessâ (Book of Job 10:21). Due to this ambiguity, some versions of the Bible translate Sheol as âthe graveâ or âthe pit,â while other editions treat the word as meaning the abode of the dead. |
