They mostly feed in a wide variety of shallow wetlands such as permanent stagnant wetlands and marshy forest clearings, reed marshes and rice fields. They feed on small rodents, frogs, snails, insects and larvae, corn, barley, wheat, oats, sunflower seeds, peas, beans, peanuts, olives, blackberries, acorns, vegetables, potatoes, plant roots and shoots.
