Harmsworth`s Universal Encyclopedia 1940s. Caran d`Ache: Characteristic example of this artist`s drawings. The elephant sees the musician blowing at this horn with all his might and, wishing to help, inserts his trunk at the wrong end and blows vigorously, with disastrous results to the musician. Caran d`Ache was the pseudonym of the 19th century French satirist and political cartoonist Emmanuel Poiré. The pseudonym comes from Russian: карандаш, romanized: karandash meaning `pencil`.
