Pictured is one of twenty statues on the façade of the Neue Burg or New Castle, part of the Hofburg Palace, Vienna, Austria. The statues were erected between 1895 and 1901 after a plan by the art historian, Albert Ilg. Franconian Gaulaf or Frankish Count by Edmun von Hellmer represents the founding of the Ostmark by Charlemagne, ruled by the count of the House of Babenberg, 976-1248.
