The Vascao River, south of Mertola as it flows through the rugged and scenic countryside of southern Portugal. For a great deal of its length as here, the river forms the border between the provinces of Alentejo and the Algarve. One suggestion for the name Vascão is the Arabic word baṣqa, `stony zone`.
