The train is owned by the Great Southern Rail. The Ghan was named after the Afghan Camellia`s who traversed the harsh desert country of Northern Territory of Australia. the Ghan starts its journey in the South at Adelaide traveling North through sweeping plains to the red centre of Alice Springs, then on to the tropical top end of Dawn. A journey of some 2,979 kilometres (1,846 miles). It is called one of the great train journey of the world.
