The "Den Gevallene" (The Fallen) monument is considered the most important war memorial in the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem. The names of nineteen men, most of whom were members of the resistance in the Gulpen district and died in 1944, are carved on the right side of the statue's pedestal. Besides Gulpen, the resistance district included Bocholtz, Simpelveld, Vaals, Wittem, and Wijlre. The names of 22 soldiers from the same district who died between 1940 and 1947 are carved on the left side of the pedestal.
