Santa Maria Assunta di Torcello is a minor basilica located on the Venetian island of Torcello. It is a notable example of Byzantine-Venetian architecture and one of the oldest religious buildings in the Veneto region, initially considered a cathedral. It contains the oldest mosaics in the region, also in the Byzantine style.According to an ancient inscription, it was founded by the exarch of Ravenna, Isaac the Armenian, in 639 (when Heraclius was emperor, Maurice was magister militum, and Maurus was bishop), when the town of Torcello was competing with the newly established Venetian settlement to become the main local center.
