The castle Glücksburg, built between 1583 and 1587 under Duke Johann the Younger 1545 -1622, belongs to one of the most important castles in Northern Europe. The builder, Nikolaus Karies, erected the castle at the site of the Cistercian monks` medieval Cistercian monastery Rudekloster until the Reformation. The granite stones from the former monastery church were partly reused in the present foundation, and many of the old bricks were further recycled to the whitewashed building. The castle has, through its function as periodic royal residence and administrative center for the Glücksburg duchy, an important place in the history of Schleswig-Holstein and Scandinavia`s history.
