Prunus ilicifolia, hollyleaf cherry or evergreen cherry is native to the chaparral areas of coastal California as well as the desert chaparral areas of the Mojave Desert. It is a native evergreen tree or shrub in the Rose family that grows in the coastal and inland valleys strip of northern, central, and southern California. The fruit is a cherry that is sweet in taste, with little flesh surrounding the smooth seed. Not a true cherry it is prized for its easy growth, taste, and attractiveness to bees and other beneficial insects.
