| Wooden carved statue of Guanyin of the Southern Sea, from China, Liao (907-1125) or Jin Dynasty (1115-1234). Bodhisattva Guanyin is the deity of mercy and compassion. The statue sits on a rockery representing the island Potalaka. Most of the statue was carved from the trunk of a single tree. Exhibited at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. |
