Averrhoa carambola L. is a perennial evergreen tree belonging to the genus Averrhoa in the family Oxalidaceae. The plant can grow up to 12 meters tall. The bark is light brown, smooth or finely fissured, and tastes slightly sweet but astringent. The odd-pinnate compound leaves are alternate, ovate or elliptic. The flowers are small, faintly fragrant, and form cymes or panicles consisting of several to many flowers. The fruit is a berry, fleshy, drooping, and has a star-like cross-section. The seeds are black-brown. The flowering period is from April to December, and the fruiting period is from July to December.
