This is an Hamadryas genus butterfly, Nymphalidae family, Biblidinae subfamily, Ageroniini tribe. Known as cracker butterflies, due to the cracking sound produced by males. They always perch upside down in the trees. Cracker butterflies are all fairly cryptic in their dorsal coloration, natural camouflage. This beautiful butterfly was observed near Cerro Cahui Protected Biotope, Peten department, northern Guatemala.
